As ProMIL widened its scope to the environment, YABONG, together with Interfacing Development Interventions for Sustainability (IDIS), conducted ProMIL for the Environment last September 2-3, 2021 via zoom conference. It is a capacity-building workshop and digital campaign that equip young environmental leaders with the necessary digital and critical thinking skills to address the issues concerning the environment.
The event featured various Media and Information Literacy (MIL) champions and environmental experts during the 2 days workshop: Ms. Sohara Mehroze Shachi, a Master in Science in Environmental Change and Management in the University of Oxford, Mr. Dun Oliver Abiera, an MIL Alliance Youth Ambassador to UNESCO and Regional Coordinator for Asia and the Pacific, Mr. Marvin Pamisa, a training specialist of Keamanan, Inc. and the Digital Manager of #KabataangDigital: Digitalizing Skills for the Youth Involved in Peacebuilding, and Ms. Therese San Diego Torres, the Director of the Research, Policy and Advocacy Unit of the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC).
The 30 participants came from various areas in the country representing their organizations and initiatives. To ensure the sustainability of ProMIL for the Environment, the participating teams were given a chance to start their own digital campaigns which shall address environmental issues in their communities.
The participants pitched in front of the pitching masters and the following digital campaign won funding to realize their initiatives: Kapyamandu-Care Project of Batang MaguindanaONE, Save Native Trees PH of Southern Christian College Supreme Student Government, and Kalinisan at Kagandahan: Kinabukasan Ko of South Christian College, College Supreme Government. Moreover, the participants had an exclusive opportunity to be trained by the plenary speakers and be mentored by MIL experts and advocates from different backgrounds, as well as build connections and collaboration within organizations.
